The Craft Beer Radio Multi-Brew Experiment (MBE) is a collaborative homebrewing project that involves the listeners of Craft Beer Radio with the premise of seeing how similar or different the same beer recipe can turn out when brewed by different people.

Participants will help choose the homebrew style and recipe, and brew their own beer. Once the beer is bottled participants will ship a six-pack of their beer to the centralized point where all the beers will be scrambled and six different beers will be returned to each participant. When all of the beer is returned we will schedule an online voice chat and do a group tasting of all the different homebrews where we can compare and discuss the results. The group chat will be recorded and posted on the podcast.

Participating

Participating is easy, when you hear a call for participants on the show simply email us letting us know that you want to be involved. You need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be able to brew beer and bottle at least six12 ounce bottles for shipping.
  • Be willing to ship your beer while knowing that it's a bit of a legal gray area.
  • Be able to participate in the online voice chat, and have a decent microphone and headphones.
  • Be willing to send return postage to get the six-pack of beers back to you.

If you agree to all of those then you're in. We will give you a number to mark your bottles with which you need to put on the caps.

Brewing Guidelines

You don't have to be a master brewer to participate the recipe we choose will have both extract and all-grain recipes. We do ask that you follow the recipe to the best of your abilities. the point of the multi-brew is not to see how creative we can be, but more accurately to see what nuances can be perceived by the different brewing techniques. Please make every effort to use the ingredients listed.

Shipping Guidelines

The first MBE was a mess when mixing up the bottles because I didn't have these guidelines. Please follow the packaging requirements to make life easier for the person mixing up the beers.

  • Pack and Pad each bottle individually
  • Make sure your bottle can be identified while still in the padding.
  • Pack your six pack in a package that can withstand a 4 foot/1 meter drop without damage.

The reason to pack each bottle padded individually is so the mixer is able to repack the bottles without needing to worry about taking off or putting on bubblewrap.

Group Tasting Information

Once all the beers are retuned to the participants a time will be scheduled that works for ss manay participants as possible. The chat software Ventrilo will be used with Greg's private server.

The Multi-Brews

Multi-Brew Experiment: I

The first MBE was a Brown Ale turned Porter. There were 7 people and it worked rather well.

Multi-Brew Experiment: II

The Failed Experiment This Alpha King Clone fell apart when I took forever to ship the beers back, then we never were able to schedule the online meeting.

Multi-Brew Experiment: III

After the disastrous MBE2 we are going to try this again. This time listener Corey will be heading up the shipping and receiving portion of the project.
